We had a great meeting last night with us discussing the beauty of Secwin 4 opposed Secwin 3 and all the great features which you can use everyday. We also discussed using the features of security to be able to handle optional features in your program which is not just bound to a customary system parameter but turned on based a security option instead.

We also then had a good discussion regarding Total Commander. This was conducted by our esteemed colleague Arthur. Arthur is the authority user and knowledge base on this product and has shown us things which are included in the product which most people never dream of when looking at the shell.

As an experiment we tried to record the session, but with Teamviewer running and Skype fighting for CPU cycle. Running Camtasia to do the recording made the system feel it had enough and we had to reboot. Thus, sorry Neville. No video for you.

Thanks to all the attended, without your participation there is no clarion user group.

We need ideas for the next meeting and we need topics that people will find relevant. Please send them through to topics (at) clarionusergroups.com

One thing we have realised here at the HCUG, is that many people still struggle to find answers to their questions regarding their Clarion Development challenges. While we nurture an attitude of helpfulness and community, and are always keen to help our fellow Clarioneers out, we also don’t want our user group meetings to become the local Clarion Anonymous Support Group (CASG). So, we decided to put together a list of some the most useful resources available, and encourage and help you to help yourself.

So, without further ado, there are 2 primary forms of Clarion Resources available, namely Newsgroups, and Online Knowledge Bases. There are both free and paid for options available.

Newsgroups

I can honestly say that from my experience, the newsgroups have been one of the best possible places for finding information and getting help. I’m sure you will find this to be true. The Clarion Community world wide is very helpful and friendly.

news.softvelocity.com

This is the primary public News Server from SoftVelocity which hosts most of the common groups available. It is free to access and use.

discuss.softvelocity.com

This is SoftVelocity’s private news server, and requires a login and password. You must be a Clarion 6 licensed user, and SV will help you with setting this up correctly. As far as I remember, the login is made up by the numeric part of your C6 serial number. Contact SV for further info.

groups.google.com/group/comp.lang.clarion?hl=en

If you are unable to access news server’s via your email reader, or prefer web based format, comp.lang.clarion is available via Google Groups.

Tip: Outlook Express support reading the NNTP protocol. If you have Outlook Express installed on your system, you can simly click the links above, and Outlook Express will prompt you through the setup. Alternatively, you can search google for various NewsReaders.

Online Knowledge Bases

Over the years, there have been various knowledge base websites popping up, but unfortunately many of them have not been maintained or drawn as much traffic and therefore have slipped into dormancy. The good news is that there are some fantastic resources available. Probably the best resource available to our community is one of the longest standing resources available, and continues to provide top quality articles and information, as well as podcasts, opinion polls, and a blog.

(Our favourites marked with a *)

ClarionMag *

This without a doubt is one of, if not the best resource available to the Clarion Community. This site is subscription based, but I am sure you will find it worth every penny. Dave Harms has been running this publication since 1999. He has vast experience in Clarion, and has been an integral part of the Clarion Community for many years. He has taken Clarion Magazine to higher and higher levels over the years, and provides a very professional service. The website has a very attractive look and feel, and utilizes some of today’s latest web technologies. ClarionMag not only provides subscriber articles, but hosts a number of other useful free resources. These include free articles, podcasts, an opinion poll, blog, and news. There are numerous RSS feeds available for these various resources. All in all, highly recommended!

SoftVelocity’s Web Portal *

SoftVelocity host their own blog, and a web based forum here. Though you will not find daily news on the Blog, this is often the place in which Bob Z (Robert Zaunere – CEO SoftVelocity) himself communicates the latest breaking news from the SV headquarters. The forums are generally quieter than the newsgroups, but are also a great source of information.

IceTips *

Arnor Baldvinsson of IceTips Software has collected a good database of Clarion articles over the years. Many of these originate from the newsgroups, and he has provided an easily accessible and searchable site for these. Use the Resources menu to access the Article Index or Search form.

Steve Parker

Steve Parker has maintained a free knowledge base and download center for many years. One of the interesting things about Steve’s site is that is built with Clarion’s Web Builder Templates.

ClarionPublisher

ClarionPublisher is a portal into currently 2 knowledge bases sites, namely ClarionFoundry, and a MSSQL FAQ site. ClarionFoundry has also been a well known and useful resource to the Clarion Community for many years. The site has loads of useful information, and also provides notifications and RSS feeds. ClarionFoundry does require a subscription fee.

ClarionFAQ

ClarionFAQ seems to be under contruction at the moment, but this URL does redirect you to the “old” site.

ClarionPost

ClarionPost is free online resource providing a forum, comprehensive download center, and Clarion links.

Other Miscellaneous Resources

SoftVelocity’s Problem Tracker – SV’s Bug Tracker for Subscribers.

We recently purchased 4 identical development laptops for the office, and as 1 of the laptops was being unused (It has to go to Namibia sometime), we decided to install Windows Vista Beta 2 on it. We received this version from our Action Pack Subscription, and have later realised it isnt the most stable version out, since RC1 just came out a week ago, but nonetheless we gave it a whirl.

So 5 minutes after installing it, we had to give Clarion a go on it, 1, to see if it would compile, and 2, to see if there are any speed improvements. And boy were we surprised!

I put my XP pro laptop next to the Vista laptop, copied my code over to the Vista laptop, and carefully using both my hands on both mice, I hit “generate all”. The Vista machine “out-compiled” XP by around 5 seconds the first run, 9 seconds the second run, and when I created a dummy global variable on both machines so that the entire app would compile, the Vista machine won by a staggering 18 seconds!

Reading Paul Thurrott’s website about Vista, I realised it isn’t a good idea to upgrade MY machine to the version of Vista we have, but if I could get my hands on RC1, which at 3.2GB’s to download, I would definitely upgrade!

So heres to Vista and Clarion. I just can’t wait!

Hi Guys. Sorry I never made it back to the meeting after my band practice, it finished later than I had anticipated.. At the meeting Dave mentioned faxing from Clarion, so I took a look at this last night and knocked up an example APP. If anyone wants to take a look you can download the example from here. It doesn’t work across a LAN (yet), for now you must enter the local PC name in the server field. My local PC is called “GARYHP”, which is why it defaults to that. You must have Microsoft Fax set up and working for this example APP to work. Also, this only works on Windows 2000, XP, and 2003.
Cheers, Gary.

Ben Riebens, one of the Helderberg Usergroup members, has released a version control system for Clarion. And because he is such a nice guy, all members can obtain a copy for free!

RVCS is safe file encrypted, so download CapeSoft’s safe file reader (which is also free!), in order to un-encrypt the file. One last thing… you going to need a password to access it. So send me an email(jasonbagley[at]eadsdirect[dot]com), and I’ll send you the password that will un-encrypt the file.

More awesome products that Ben is working on, can be found at his website – www.riebens.co.za

Please note that this program is NOT a FREE product, and as such, the product may not be distributed to anyone else. The RVCS is under constant development and any requests may be directed to Ben at bdl@riebens.co.za for enhancements and upgrades.

The product makes use of the Integrated IDE Version Control from Softvelocity, and some versions of Clarion 6 have TXA/TXD problems and may cause problems for the use of RVCS. Please always make a backup of any program before using RVCS. (Clarion 9050 is especially suspect)
