We had a great meeting last night with us discussing the beauty of Secwin 4 opposed Secwin 3 and all the great features which you can use everyday. We also discussed using the features of security to be able to handle optional features in your program which is not just bound to a customary system parameter but turned on based a security option instead.

We also then had a good discussion regarding Total Commander. This was conducted by our esteemed colleague Arthur. Arthur is the authority user and knowledge base on this product and has shown us things which are included in the product which most people never dream of when looking at the shell.

As an experiment we tried to record the session, but with Teamviewer running and Skype fighting for CPU cycle. Running Camtasia to do the recording made the system feel it had enough and we had to reboot. Thus, sorry Neville. No video for you.

Thanks to all the attended, without your participation there is no clarion user group.

We need ideas for the next meeting and we need topics that people will find relevant. Please send them through to topics (at) clarionusergroups.com

One thing we have realised here at the HCUG, is that many people still struggle to find answers to their questions regarding their Clarion Development challenges. While we nurture an attitude of helpfulness and community, and are always keen to help our fellow Clarioneers out, we also don’t want our user group meetings to become the local Clarion Anonymous Support Group (CASG). So, we decided to put together a list of some the most useful resources available, and encourage and help you to help yourself.

So, without further ado, there are 2 primary forms of Clarion Resources available, namely Newsgroups, and Online Knowledge Bases. There are both free and paid for options available.

Newsgroups

I can honestly say that from my experience, the newsgroups have been one of the best possible places for finding information and getting help. I’m sure you will find this to be true. The Clarion Community world wide is very helpful and friendly.

news.softvelocity.com

This is the primary public News Server from SoftVelocity which hosts most of the common groups available. It is free to access and use.

discuss.softvelocity.com

This is SoftVelocity’s private news server, and requires a login and password. You must be a Clarion 6 licensed user, and SV will help you with setting this up correctly. As far as I remember, the login is made up by the numeric part of your C6 serial number. Contact SV for further info.

groups.google.com/group/comp.lang.clarion?hl=en

If you are unable to access news server’s via your email reader, or prefer web based format, comp.lang.clarion is available via Google Groups.

Tip: Outlook Express support reading the NNTP protocol. If you have Outlook Express installed on your system, you can simly click the links above, and Outlook Express will prompt you through the setup. Alternatively, you can search google for various NewsReaders.

Online Knowledge Bases

Over the years, there have been various knowledge base websites popping up, but unfortunately many of them have not been maintained or drawn as much traffic and therefore have slipped into dormancy. The good news is that there are some fantastic resources available. Probably the best resource available to our community is one of the longest standing resources available, and continues to provide top quality articles and information, as well as podcasts, opinion polls, and a blog.

(Our favourites marked with a *)

ClarionMag *

This without a doubt is one of, if not the best resource available to the Clarion Community. This site is subscription based, but I am sure you will find it worth every penny. Dave Harms has been running this publication since 1999. He has vast experience in Clarion, and has been an integral part of the Clarion Community for many years. He has taken Clarion Magazine to higher and higher levels over the years, and provides a very professional service. The website has a very attractive look and feel, and utilizes some of today’s latest web technologies. ClarionMag not only provides subscriber articles, but hosts a number of other useful free resources. These include free articles, podcasts, an opinion poll, blog, and news. There are numerous RSS feeds available for these various resources. All in all, highly recommended!

SoftVelocity’s Web Portal *

SoftVelocity host their own blog, and a web based forum here. Though you will not find daily news on the Blog, this is often the place in which Bob Z (Robert Zaunere – CEO SoftVelocity) himself communicates the latest breaking news from the SV headquarters. The forums are generally quieter than the newsgroups, but are also a great source of information.

IceTips *

Arnor Baldvinsson of IceTips Software has collected a good database of Clarion articles over the years. Many of these originate from the newsgroups, and he has provided an easily accessible and searchable site for these. Use the Resources menu to access the Article Index or Search form.

Steve Parker

Steve Parker has maintained a free knowledge base and download center for many years. One of the interesting things about Steve’s site is that is built with Clarion’s Web Builder Templates.

ClarionPublisher

ClarionPublisher is a portal into currently 2 knowledge bases sites, namely ClarionFoundry, and a MSSQL FAQ site. ClarionFoundry has also been a well known and useful resource to the Clarion Community for many years. The site has loads of useful information, and also provides notifications and RSS feeds. ClarionFoundry does require a subscription fee.

ClarionFAQ

ClarionFAQ seems to be under contruction at the moment, but this URL does redirect you to the “old” site.

ClarionPost

ClarionPost is free online resource providing a forum, comprehensive download center, and Clarion links.

Other Miscellaneous Resources

SoftVelocity’s Problem Tracker – SV’s Bug Tracker for Subscribers.

Clarion Developer Photo Gallery – Sterling Data provides an photo gallery of Clarion Developers from around the world.

Clarion Developer Skill Pool – Sterling Data provides a skill pool of Clarion Developers from around the world.

Clarion Jobs – This is a new Clarion specific Job site.

ClarionShop – The biggest and best place to buy your Clarion 3rd Party Tools!

Clarion 3rd Party Profile Exchange – A categorized list of 3rd Party vendors and products.

So there you have it folks. We here at HCUG can’t tell you how useful these resources have been during our Clarion Careers, and have aided us in our businesses. We strongly encourage everyone to utilize and participate in this wonderful community of Clarion Developers.

‘Til next time,

I’d just like to inform everyone that we are having a Usergroup meeting next week Wednesday. We would really like to see as many of you as possible there, as it will be David’s last meeting with the group for quite some time. For those of you that might not know, he is moving to Namibia. We wish David all the best with his family in Namibia, and I’m hoping we have a massive turnout to say goodbye and thanks for all the hard work David has put into Usergroup.

On another note, the Helderberg Clarion User Group will still be alive! Gerrit and I will be looking after it, and we need as many of you to participate to keep it as successful as it has been. So what is changing then?

Venue: Will not change
Time: Will not change
Snacks: Will have to change. But we will make a plan.
Drinks: Will not change

So there you have it. I’ll be sending an email out later this week about the meeting aswell, so you have to excuse to miss the meeting.

Hope to see ALL of you there.

Jason

As I promised, here is the poll. We want to know, which day of the week best suits you when it comes to having UserGroup meetings. Currently all our meetings are held on Wednesday evenings, but we are starting to notice that the numbers seem to be down on previous meetings (although our mailing list increases almost weekly!).

So please vote on the poll, as well as leave comments or suggestions on the meeting dates / times or anything else you can think of.

Last night, another successful Usergroup was held at Dave’s home. Although the turn out wasn’t up to our normal numbers, we still had lots to chat and discuss.

Alten had his usual “Why should I be using Clarion” questions, which brought up the whole “So when is Clarion 7 being released?” and “Will 7 live up to the hype?” discussion. And with Bruce and Jono from CapeSoft joining us for the first time, and they had some very interesting answers to those questions. Although we never got a date for the Clarion 7 release out of Bruce, we sure hoping its soon.

Another discussion we had was about the date and day that Usergroup is usually held. Its starting to seem that Wednesday’s doesn’t seem to be fitting anymore. With touch rugby, studies, band practice and television getting in the way, we might be moving it. But not before a democratic vote! I’ll be posting a poll here so that we can find a date that can accomodate as many usergroup members as possible. More on that poll soon…

On another note, there are still 1 or 2 spots available on CapeSoft’s World Tour – Cape Town, so if you interested to learn more about CapeSofts products and how to actually use them, get in touch. Registration ends tomorrow.

One last thing, the topics email will be going out on the 5th of June. So think about some of the interesting things you would like to chat about, or questions you would like to ask, and wait for that email.

Until then,
Cheers

Jason

A big thanks goes to everyone who attended last nights meeting. The meeting was arranged at very short notice (1 day) and we had a very successful turnout. We decided to give Karin a break from making snacks and ordered Wacky Wednesday’s from Steers. I’m sure everyone enjoyed it.

Welcome to Harry who has been on our mailing list from the beginning, but is a newbie to our group. Welcome! We also missed Gary and Trevor last night… Gary had to sort out a small tiff he had between “Gary the-programmer”, “Gary the-business-owner” and “Gary the-family-man”. Trevor sends his apologies, as he seemed to be part of a sabotage attempt on his car (I’m sure he will tell us all about it. Very scary.). We really glad he is ok.

The meeting went very smoothly, with Ben talking about Secwin Online Server and how he uses it to manage his product licences as well as his views on the product. On a side-note, Ben will be giving all the HCUG users a copy of his Clarion Version Control system he developed. Thanks Ben! Info on that soon….

There wasn’t a shortage of topics to chat about, but for the exception of Ben’s discussion that we pre-arranged, there weren’t any other topics to that we had decided on beforehand. Marius brought along a projector which we didn’t use, so from now on I will be sending out a mail beforehand (at least a week before ) to ask for topics to discuss. We seriously need to see some live demos!

So on that note, for those of you that want to post here, please do!
Need a login? – hcug[at]clarionusergroups.com

Oh ja, almost forgot – Thanks to David for the use of his home for the meeting and to Karin and Jason (No not me!) for getting us our grub. I’m sure I speak for the entire group when I say HCUG wouldn’t be the same without David and Karin and all they do for the group. Big thank you.

Cheers
